Troubles in Toyland

Troubles in Toyland

This week, toy giant Mattel recalled nearly twenty million units of playthings all deemed by the company to be toxic--and all in different, delightful ways, from lead paint to bite-sized magnets. Mattel--and its manufacturing division in China--found itself at the center of of a public health scandal to rival the recent spate of pet illnesses and deaths by way of Chinese plastic-poisoned pet food. China may have executed the minister that let those foods pass inspection, but the problems seem to persist. Even the head of the toy factory committed suicide over the troubles.

These cartoon scenarios are seriously twisted, just like the current state of affairs in kid-friendly abodes across the U.S. Toxic trucks and baleful Barbies; bobble-headed children with bug eyes and serious concerns; and corner-cutting execs forced into the hot seat. Poison playthings may be off the shelves at the local Wal-Mart, but they'll be sticking around here for a little longer.
