Wacky Weather or Warming World? Cartoonists Weigh In

Wacky Weather or Warming World? Cartoonists Weigh In

By Susie Cagle

Record-breaking frost in California, a European heat wave and an Eastern U.S. alternately temperate, then blanketed in snow and ice. It doesn't seem to be a wave of wacky weather or the El Nino effect anymore: it's global warming. Politicians aren't united in how to alleviate the problem--or even address it--and neither are cartoonists.

Many cartoonists outside the U.S. use basic symbols and imagery to portray the scorched planet. Their drawings are less wordy and more emotional than the American cartoons we're used to. The International Herald Tribune's Swiss cartoonist, Patrick Chappatte draws an oblivious family who are shocked and terrified by their own pollution. Mexico's Angel Boligan's gluttonous symbol for all mankind waits anxiously as he heats up the Earth in the microwave, salivating for the moment he can carve it up and devour it for himself.

American cartoonists are more willing to engage in the blame game. While John Darkow places responsibility on an ignorant President Bush, Larry Wright blames the media. Mike Lester pokes fun at anyone and everyone who's upset about global warming.
