Americans May Not Love the Troop Surge but Cartoonists Sure Do

Americans May Not Love the Troop Surge, but Cartoonists Sure Do

by Susie Cagle

President Bush's plan for a troop surge of 21,500 in Iraq might not solve his problems, but it works for cartoonists. The nation-wide response, from both Democrats on Capitol Hill and the American people, has been resounding - and negative. With approval ratings at an all-time low, it's not surprising that most cartoonists are finding it all-too-easy to poke fun at Bush and his Iraq debacle. There's certainly been no dearth of Iraq cartoons over the course of the war, but there's been a definite surge as of late.

Daryl Cagle portrays President Bush needing a surge fix in the vein of alterna-comics granddaddy R. Crumb, while Swedish cartoonist Olle Johansson's Bush is shown winding up the troops and sending them off to certain doom. R.J. Matson portrays the president's surge as a political rather than war-time strategy. And Singapore's Deng Coy Miel illustrates Bush's State of the Union podium as an ominous tank--that speech being the launching point of a new stage in the Iraq war, and a new theme in editorial cartoons.
