"Shut Up and Keep Driving"
"Shut Up and Keep Driving"
Democrats were whining about conservative talk radio the other day. Complaining to the New York Times that Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz and myself and others have too many listeners and need to be countered by liberal talk show hosts.
They can't understand that our success is the direct result of the public's revulsion with the overwhelming liberal domination of the mainstream media. Millions of Americans are simply reacting to, and rejecting decades of liberal propaganda masquerading as news being broadcast by the networks and published by such leftist outlets as the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
The liberals are baffled. They can't understand that the reason we're there is that people listen to us, and when people listen, sponsors buy time, and they make money by putting us on the air, and we get good ratings by being on the air. That's simple economics, but simple economics is something Democrats and liberals don't understand.
They have all these leftist outlets such as CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN and NPR preaching their propaganda day in and day out, and they go bonkers when something like Fox News comes along and dares to present the news in a fair and evenly balanced manner.
They've tried liberal talk radio -- it doesn't go anywhere because nobody listens, Phil Donahue being their latest disaster. It doesn't work because people are already up to their ears in the liberal claptrap being fed to them by the networks and the mainstream media. They think the reason people listen to us is because we're mad and angry and they need liberal talk show hosts who will be mad and angry.
But we're not mad and angry -- we're just honest - honest about America, honest about the way we feel, honest about our families, and we don't consider ourselves victims. Liberal talk show hosts always think of themselves as victims when they fail to attract listeners.
Some unnamed Democrat told the Times that "If you start from the premise that the message was right, which we do, then the problem was that it wasn't getting out to the people." But their message is never right and it is getting out to the people -- all the time, every minute of the day and night, you can't get away from it. The only way you can get away from it is to listen to us.
We have ideas -- their message is blame, a message of victimization. It's always the same -- the sky is falling, class warfare, racial warfare. Setting Americans against Americans. And, by the way, we have to raise your taxes because it's the rich people that are causing the problems in America today.
They can't understand that we have large audiences because we've worked hard to get them. I've worked my tail off. I've been in this business since 1983. I was replaced by Rush Limbaugh's national show, one of the 600 plus local shows he replaced. I could have played victim like the liberals, gone home and blamed Rush Limbaugh. But what I did was start my own national talk radio show with just 5 stations, four taped delayed, one live one.
I drove 262 miles a day between L.A and San Diego, ultimately putting 272, 000 miles on my car. Being paid nothing. Selling time for a mere $3 a minute. That's how I started. I challenge any liberal talk show host to do the same thing to get on the air. But they wouldn't do that -- they'd consider themselves victims.
One day I was feeling like a victim. I called my mom, Jane Wyman. I said "Mom, I don't know what to do. There's no money coming in. What can I do?" And she gave me the best advice I ever got. She said "Shut up, and keep driving."
Liberals want radio welfare. They don't think they should have to work. They want it handed to them on a silver platter. If they want to get on talk radio and succeed they should shut up and keep driving. They can start whiner's radio. And see how many whiners there are out there to listen to them.
