Light of Hope Gala Recognizes Heroes of Child Abuse

Light of Hope Gala Recognizes Heroes of Child Abuse

By Michael Reagan and Jerome Elam

In August of 1995 Mika Moulton suffered a tragic loss when her son, ten-year-old Christopher, was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a paroled sex offender.

While playing with his friends, Christopher was targeted by Timothy Buss, who had just served twelve years of a twenty-five year sentence for the murder of five-year old Tara Sue Huffman. Christopher's body was found in a shallow grave eight days after his disappearance, his small body riddled with fifty knife wounds and his genitals severed. Numerous defensive wounds marked Christopher's hands as he attempted to stop his own brutal murder.

Mika Moulton remembers the moment her worst fears were realized: 'My doorbell rang at 3:00 a.m. The lead investigator on the case, Jo Mulcahy, stood at my door. Alone. She stepped into my house, we sat down on the couch and I looked into her beautiful eyes. She reached to hold my hand and informed me that a child's body had been found. As her eyes began to glisten with tears, she said that they couldn't confirm that it was Christopher. However, I knew that there were no other children missing. Through forensics and autopsy, it was determined to be Christopher.'

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that there are currently 617,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, and typically 100,000 of those are unaccounted for. Other pedophiles are not on records or in databases. Pedophiles like Jerry Sandusky walk silently among us, and Sandusky showed us just how well they disguise themselves. On the average those convicted of sexually abusing a child serve less than a year of jail time and 32 percent to 46 percent serve no jail time at all. CDC research has estimated that approximately one in six boys and one in four girls are sexually abused before the age of 18. Worldwide, 550 million children are survivors of child sexual abuse and each child victim has to tell an average of seven adults before they are believed.

Mika Moulton rose from the ashes of the devastating loss of her son. She began working with the local sheriff's office to educate and empower parents and children on how to recognize and defend against child predators. One year after his death the Christopher Meyer Safety Center opened. Mika eventually moved to California and realizing there were no organizations offering training to help protect children, she started Christopher's Clubhouse. Mika has dedicated her life to saving parents and children form the tragedy she suffered as a young mother.

I am deeply honored to be a part of an organization such as Christopher's Clubhouse. As a survivor of child sex abuse, I have endured a lifetime of pain and suffering as a result of the abuse I suffered as a child. If only there had been someone like Mika back then I may have been saved from the predator who stole my innocence. Today I thank God for giving me the strength to survive and for my wife Colleen who is my North Star. She guides me when I feel lost and teaches me every day the meaning of unconditional love and dedication.

On May 3, Christopher's Clubhouse will hold their annual Light of Hope Awards Gala at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino. Receiving a lifetime achievement award will be Ally Jacobs, a retired UC Berkeley police officer who is being recognized for efforts in helping to rescue kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard. I am both humbled and honored to be the recipient of the Christopher's Clubhouse Champion for Children Award. I am truly blessed to have found God's purpose for me in fighting to save innocent children from predators.

Mika Moulton suffered the heartbreak of a lifetime and turned her tragedy into triumph. There is not a day that goes by that she does not think of Christopher and his beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Please join us on May 3 so we can all come together to show how important the protection of our innocent children and our greatest treasure is to us all.
